After pleading for information for five days, police have been able to name a Hamilton woman found dead in a city stream at the weekend.
Joan Pani Hiwinui, 40, was discovered dead on Sunday, in knee deep water in the Waitawhiriwhiri Stream, in Edgecumbe Park in the Hamilton suburb of Whitiora.
A search to identify her came to an end yesterday when family contacted police with concerns they had not seen or heard from Ms Hiwinui for several days, Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton of the Hamilton CIB said.
"Her case has been reported to the coroner who will determine the cause of death. At this point, from a police perspective, we're happy about being able to bring closure for both Joan and her family's sake.
"We'll be meeting with family this afternoon to discuss what, if any, further details can be released. At this time the family are extremely distraught and they have asked that their privacy be respected at this time."
Ms Hiwinui died after she missed a bend on her bicycle, braked and crashed into a tree, flying over the front handlebars into the stream.
