Police officer gets warning after off-duty fight

A police officer has received a formal warning after getting into a fight in central Christchurch while off-duty.

Police notified the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) after the incident was seen on CCTV footage, showing the officer fighting with several unknown men.

An IPCA report released on Friday said the officer received a broken nose and fractured eye socket during the incident.

While no formal complaints were made to police, there was sufficient evidence to prosecute the officer, the report said.

However, it was considered not in the public interest to do so and the officer received a formal warning for assault and disorderly behaviour.

He was subsequently dealt with through an employment process which resulted in a sanction and the IPCA agreed with the outcome.
