Police seek witnesses to sexual assault

Police are seeking witnesses to an alleged sexual assault on a 20-year-old woman on the banks of the Avon River in Christchurch on Sunday.

The woman was assaulted after changing her route home to avoid a group of males who were on the corner of Madras and Armagh Streets, Christchurch CIB Detective Glenn Pascoe said.

The woman was extremely affected after the assault, which happened about 1.30am to 2am on Sunday.

"We'd like to speak to anybody who may have witnessed this assault," Mr Pascoe said.

Police were also "very interested in speaking to the males in the group on the corner of Madras and Armagh Streets", he said.

Anyone in the area at the time and any other witnesses who may have any information should contact Christchurch CIB, Mr Pascoe said.
