Power failure hits West Coast

A fault on the Transpower line at Dobson cut electricity to large parts of the West Coast about midday today. The national grid provider said it was not immediately known what caused the Dobson transmitter to trip.

Electricity was restored progressively. Greymouth was back on line at 12.40pm, but Hokitika had to wait until 1pm. Reefton and the upper Grey Valley were unaffected.

Transpower said its second line into the Coast, from Lake Coleridge to Otira, was down for maintenance at the time.
