An earthquake struck north of White Island late last night.
The magnitude 4.7 quake shook a spot 110 kilometres north of White Island, off the Bay of Plenty, about 11.25pm, GeoNet said. It was at a depth of 25km.
The organisation originally put the strength of the earthquake at magnitude 4.9, but this was later downgraded.
Almost 30 people had so far lodged felt reports with GeoNet, which described the quake as moderate.
