The biggest individual strike win was $1.45m in October 1993 by a Waitakere ticket.
New Zealand Lotteries chief executive Todd McLeay said the record amount was reached in seven weeks thanks to a recent Powerball jackpot run and high Lotto Strike sales.
Three other Lotto players, in Papakura, Waipu and Hamilton, each won $666,667 in Lotto First Division.
