Referee dies at U-13 rugby game

A referee has died at an under-13s club rugby game in Blenheim.

Sergeant Jason Munro of Blenheim Police said the 62-year-old man collapsed about ten minutes into refereeing the game around 10am at Lansdowne Park.

Bystanders and ambulance staff attempted resuscitation for about 50 minutes but were unable to revive him and he died at the scene.

"He was well-known and well-respected and it was obviously distressing for everybody," Mr Munro said.

The death has been referred to the coroner.
