Removal of door handle 'led to boy's death'

A Coroner's hearing into the accidental stangling death of a Napier school boy has heard he tried to climb from a toilet window as there was no handle on the door.

Nine-year-old Aryan Banerjee died from critical head injuries at Hawke's Bay Hospital in September last year.

He had been in an induced coma after choking on May 25 when his shirt got caught as he tried to jump from a window at Taradale Primary School in Napier, Fairfax reports.

Coroner Tim Scott has heard the door handle was left on the ground in front of the toilet, while it was being repaired.

A staff member says door was not taped off to stop children from using the toilet, because it should have been a quick fix.

Staff members are today giving evidence today at the Coroner's hearing.

Mr Scott will today look at the actions of key staff members involved in the incident and what school procedures have been changed as a result of the death.
