Rug up for a wet weekend

Rug up warm - it'll be miserable and wet for most of us this weekend.

Rain and wind are forecast in Wellington on Saturday, where thousands of rugby fans will be heading to the second test between the All Blacks and the British and Irish Lions.

Much of the country can expect a drenching. "It's not looking nice, let's start with that,'' Metservice meteorologist John Law warned on Thursday.

This week's settled weather was now shifting out to the east and would be replaced with a low-pressure system bringing a good amount of rain for the North and South Islands.

Rain would start to hit the western coast of the South Island on Friday and would spill over into the North Island overnight, Mr Law said.

"I think we're going to struggle. I think we're all going to see a bit of that wet weather this weekend.''

There were severe weather warnings out for Westland and Buller, where 140mm of rain is expected to fall, particularly about the ranges. The heavy rain could lead to slips and surface flooding.

On Friday, most of the North Island could expect cloud to start developing and rain coming in the evening.

In Wellington, there was a rough prediction of 10-20mm of heavy rain for Saturday, and overall 15-30mm for the weekend. Game day was also expected to be typical windy, with speeds of 40-50km/h predicted.

Saturday would have a high of 13degC and a low of 10degC for the capital, and Sunday would bring a predicted low of 8degC.

In other main areas, Dunedin was forecast to have highs of 11degC, Christchuch 11-12degC and Auckland 15-16degC.
