Search on after snorkelling gear washes up

A snorkeller's catch bag and glove have washed up on the shore of Cable Bay, sparking a search by police and emergency services.

Northern police communications Inspector Willie Taylor said police were called by a member of the public just after 3pm, saying the snorkeller - initially identified as a diver - had not returned to land for three hours.

The male snorkeller had been in the water directly out from the Cable Bay township, in the Far North, and the catch bag and glove had washed up on shore, he said.

Search and rescue, Coastguard and police - including a light aircraft - are involved in the search.

"I don't think the sea conditions will be that rough up there but there's water and there's always perils associated with water," he said.
