David Fountain was last seen leaving the Top Hut Hotel in Twizel on Sunday at 1am, Canterbury Police said on their Facebook page.
Mr Fountain had been out with a group of workmates.
He was supposed to turn up for work on Sunday morning and, when he failed to show, his work colleagues, then his family, contacted police, Fairfax reports.
Police said they had concerns for his safety as his disappearance was very out of character.
He was wearing a black polar fleece top and dark blue jeans. His grey Nissan Primera (FZF585) is also missing.
Anyone with any information was asked to contact police by calling 111 or through the Canterbury Police Facebook page.
