Search resumes for missing fisherman

A search has resumed this morning for a fisherman who has not been seen since his boat capsized in an estuary north of Auckland on Saturday.

The man, believed to be aged between 24 and 26, was one of two men in a 2.5 metre inflatable boat when it flipped in Whangateau Harbour, near Leigh, east of Warkworth, around 11am on Saturday.

He was not wearing a life jacket at the time, and was described as wearing a heavy leather jacket.

The search for the missing man resumed this morning, Auckland Maritime Police duty sergeant John Saunders said.

The dive squad were due to re-enter the water at 7am.

There had been no new developments in the case overnight, he said.

Yesterday the police Eagle helicopter, Coastguard air patrol, volunteers and divers all took part in the search.

The small dinghy the two men were in, capsized as they tried to retrieve an oar, and they were both thrown overboard.

One of the men was able to swim back to shore and raised the alarm.
