Series of quakes shake Christchurch

Residents in Christchurch were shaken awake by a magnitude five earthquake early this morning.

The quake struck at 2.47am, 10km east of Christchurch and 9km deep, GNS science says.

It was followed by a series of quakes measuring 3.1 at 4am, a 3.7 at 5am and a 3.3 at 7am (0500 AEDT).

There were no reports of further damage to the city, police said.
