Serious crash in Hawkes Bay

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after a serious crash in Hawkes Bay shortly before midday.

In what appeared to be a medical event, the man lost control of his car, crashing into a traffic island near the intersection of Havelock Rd and St George's Rd about 11.15am.

The car came to rest with its rear on pedestrian barriers.

Police were on the scene and Havelock Rd was expected to remain closed until at least 1.20pm.

"A person required CPR at the scene and they were removed soon thereafter to Hastings Hospital in an attempt to revive them," said Senior Sergeant Nick Dobson of Eastern District Police.

A Central Fire Communications shift commander said firefighters from Hastings and Havelock North were sent to the scene about 11.18am.

"It was basically to assist ambulance and police. There didn't seem to be any entrapment but I've got a funny feeling it was more a medical problem than anything else."

Hawke's Bay Today reported no other vehicles were involved in the accident.
