One person is believed to have died in a three-car crash on State Highway 1 near Puhipuhi Rd, north of Whangarei.
Police said the crash happened around 3:45pm and SH1 has been closed.
Two people were seriously injured in the crash, police said.
Motorists heading north are being diverted through Jordan Valley Road and those heading south are being diverted through Hukerenui Road.
