Seven girls injured in drink-drive crash

Seven girls under the age of 10 have been injured in a three-car crash in Auckland which police believe was caused by a drink-driver.

Police are at the scene of the three-car crash on State Highway 20, near the Massey Rd East off-ramp in South Auckland this afternoon.

It was believed a drink-driver rear-ended two other vehicles carrying eight young girls in total, police said.

One of the vehicles had five female children between the ages of 2 and 10 years in it who received moderate injuries.

"The other vehicle had three female children aged 2, 8 and 10 in it. The 10- and 8-year-old females from this vehicle have been transferred to Middlemore Hospital with extensive injuries," police said in a statement.

Police said it was a miracle, given the age of the children and the circumstances, that no one was killed.
