Sexual abduction in Mount Maunganui

A man who police believe is responsible for a sexual abduction in Mount Maunganui has been arrested and will appear in court tomorrow.

The arrest follows a public appeal by police to track the alleged culprit down.

The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police had earlier said a man approached the 21-year-old woman about 4am in the area of Mount Maunganui's Banks Ave. He allegedly made comments indicating sexual motivation and grabbed the woman but she managed to get away and seek help. The man had a dark coloured 3 Series BMW, possibly from the 1990s.

Security footage of a man and a vehicle were circulated publicly yesterday, resulting in the identification of a suspect.

This morning a 35-year-old man from New Plymouth was arrested at a motel in Mount Maunganui. He has been charged with abducting a woman for sex and will appear at Tauranga District Court tomorrow.

Police issued a statement expressing thanks to the public and media for their assistance with the appeal.
