Police are attending a firearms incident near Norsewood, 20km northeast of Dannevirke.
Police received reports of a man being seen with a gun near State Highway 2 about 10km from Norsewood about an hour ago.
Shots had reportedly been fired, police spokeswoman Kim Perks said.
It is understood a man crawled for help after being shot and police were speaking to witnesses.
It was not a siege situation, Ms Perks said.
She could not provide any further details.
