Soldier not guilty over training deat

A soldier has been found not guilty of a charge of negligence over the death of Private Michael Ross.

Corporal Timothy Goodall was the boat commander on board a Zodiac inflatable boat when Private Ross fell overboard and drowned, during a training exercise on Lake Moawhango, near Waiouru, in 2012.

It has since been found that the boat was under-inflated.

Private Ross' life jacket also failed to inflate because a used gas canister had not been replaced.

At a summary trial at Linton Military Camp today, Goodall was found not guilty of a charge of negligently permitting a boat to be hazarded.

Goodall also pleaded guilty to a charge of negligently failing to perform a duty.

A charge of negligently doing an act likely to cause loss of life while operating a boat was dismissed.

Two other soldiers were also facing charges today in relation to the death of Private Ross.
