Stranded whales put down

Twenty-two whales have re-stranded at Ohope Beach in the Bay of Plenty this morning.

The Department of Conservation received a report from a member of the public at the beach about 6.20am that 22 whales had re-stranded.

DoC staff and Project Jonah volunteers had responded to the beach to begin refloat attempts.

Today's mass stranding followed the refloat of 21 whales yesterday and the refloat of 30 whales on Tuesday night.

A total of 24 whales died yesterday following the stranding, including 10 that were euthanised.
