Teen arrested after third bank robbery

A man has been arrested over the aggravated robberies of three Auckland banks in the past week.

An 18-year-old man will appear in Auckland District Court tomorrow facing a number of charges relating to the robbery of the National Bank in Newmarket this morning, the ASB Bank at St Lukes yesterday and the Post Shop on Dominion Road last Tuesday.

Police are continuing to investigate the robberies along with other bank robberies that have happened in the city.

Yesterday, a young man robbed the ASB Bank in St Luke's mall. Detective Sergeant Jason McIntosh, Avondale CIB, said the offender entered the bank shortly after it opened and waited in line with other customers before approaching a teller.

"He has then informed the teller that he had a firearm and demanded cash," Mr McIntosh said.

"Cash amounting to $3300 has been handed over to the offender." Police will not confirm if the arrested man is connected to the robbery of an ASB Bank at Blockhouse Bay on Friday, when a heavily disguised man robbed the bank at gunpoint before escaping with a large amount of cash.
