A teenager whose body was found yesterday in a driveway in Murupara, about 65km south east of Rotorua, died of head injuries, police said today.
Kaine Ernest Lewis (17), of Kaingaroa, was found in the Tawa Street driveway about 1.50am yesterday.
Rotorua Acting Area Commander Greg Sparrow said a post-mortem showed Kaine died of head injuries but police were unable to comment on what caused them.
It was understood he had been involved in a confrontation with one or more of the residents at the address.
"Police have spent much of the day in Murupara today, speaking with witnesses and continuing the forensic examinations," Mr Sparrow said.
"A large number of residents and witnesses have been interviewed, and these interviews will continue over the next couple of days." Mr Sparrow earlier said it was too early to confirm whether there was any gang connection to the incident.
"However, that is an avenue that is being considered."
