Teen driver facing raft of charges after pursuit

A 15-year-old boy faces numerous charges after allegedly crashing a stolen car into a Masterton house during a police pursuit early today.

Police spotted the Saab's driver acting suspiciously on Villa Street near the Waipoua River about 2am, but the vehicle took off when approached.

The car was pursued along several Masterton streets, with police following several hundred metres behind, Senior Sergeant Warwick Burr told NZPA.

The driver attempted to take a sharp turn from High Street into Judds Road, but smashed through a concrete block fence and into a house catching fire.

While the 18-year-old passenger remained by the car, the 15-year-old driver fled the scene, but was found a short time later by a police dog.

He was arrested and charged with unlawful taking, dangerous driving, failing to stop and driving while disqualified.

Mr Burr was unable to say whether the 18-year-old would face charges.

He said the house was significantly damaged.
