A member of the public who spotted two men who appeared to be stealing boxes of cheese in Manawatu, tailed them as they drove around rural back roads, tossing the boxes from their car window.
The men were seen loading their vehicle with the boxes, which contained a number of 10kg blocks of cheese, a police communications spokesperson said.
Two men located shortly after by police were said to be helping with inquiries, while another two men were being sought.
Many of the cheese blocks disintegrated on impact with the road, but some were believed to have survived and may have been picked up by passersby.
"Anyone locating a block is requested to contact police. It will be easily identifiable by the level of road grit found in the contents when eaten," the spokesperson said.
