Thousands still without power after storm

Thousands of people are still without power after the worst storm to hit the Auckland region since 1975, Vector says.

Vector said its crews have made good progress in restoring power to the majority of the 90,000 customers cut off at the height of the storm.

In Auckland, 1129 customers are still without power.

Widespread cuts across Tauranga, South Waikato and Coromandel have left 3,000 customers still without power, down from 40,000.

Powerco said most of the damage has been caused by trees falling across lines, and extra field crews have been brought on board to help with affected areas.

Vector said several spans of lines were damaged by debris during the storm, complicating restoration efforts.

Customers are advised to stay away from fallen powerlines and to contact their electricity retailers to report faults and to find out restoration times.
