Tip of the Far North cut off after washout

The northern tip of the Far North has been cut off due to a washout on State Highway One.

The road is washed out between Whalers Rd and Lamb Rd, near Pukenui at about 3.50pm.

Pukenui is 35km north of Awanui, on the way to Cape Reinga.

Facebook user Troy Denison posted a photo of the dramatic damage with people standing by the crevass in the road staring in disbelief.

New Zealand Transport Agency said their is no detour available and is advising motorists to avoid the area or delay their journeys.

Fishing competition Snapper Bonanza, which runs until Saturday on Ninety Mile Beach, posted a photo of the washout on their Facebook page, and told competitors to drive down the beach.
