Toddler hit by car in driveway

A 2-year-old girl sustained a serious cut to her head when she was hit by a car on the driveway of her Mangere home this morning.

Police Sergeant Kylie Newton said the girl had been playing with her siblings when she was hit by a Holden sedan that was reversing down the driveway shortly after 10am.

She was taken to Middlemore Hospital where she was in a stable condition in the critical care unit this afternoon.

Emergency services were alerted by a neighbour who heard screams for help from the scene.

Sgt Newton would not disclose who was driving the vehicle but said police were speaking with members of the child's family.

"No decision has been made on whether to charge or not yet," he said.

The child's injuries were the result of her head hitting the driveway and she was not run over by the vehicle, he said.

"Police are grateful that nothing further happened to the child and that the child is now in a stable condition receiving excellent care."
