Toddler injured in driveway accident

A Hawke's Bay toddler run over in the driveway of her home today is tonight being transferred to Auckland's Starship Hospital for specialist care.

Hastings police Sergeant Clint Adamson said the 17-month old was injured in the suburb of Flaxmere about 10.30am.

"A courier driver had been to the address to deliver a package and while he was there the toddler managed to walk down the driveway from the rear of the property without being seen and has stopped in front of the van," he said.

The girl was hit as the van was driven away.

Mr Adamson said she was taken to Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital by her family with internal injuries but her condition had deteriorated.

She was tonight being transferred to Starship Hospital in Auckland for specialist care.

Police were investigating the incident.

It is the second driveway accident in eight days.

A 21-month-old boy died on August 22 under the wheels of his mother's car in the driveway of their Gisborne home.

The mother is understood to have reversed her car over her son's trike in the driveway.

As she pushed the car forward, it rolled over her son, who was in front of the vehicle.
