A toddler suffered serious injuries when it was thrown from a car in a crash on a Hawkes Bay highway.
Police said a car carrying two adults and two young children hit a truck and trailer unit on State Highway 50A near Meeanee Overbridge at about midday.
The car was shunted into a ditch on the opposite side of the road.
A 3-year-old child suffered serious injuries after being thrown from the vehicle.
The driver, a 31-year-old local man, also suffered serious injuries, while a 30-year-old woman and a 1-year-old child suffered minor injuries.
Witnesses told police the car appeared to turn into the path of the truck.
