Tourist seriously hurt in quad bike accident

A Scottish tourist suffered serious leg injuries and possible back injuries after losing control of a quad bike and rolling down a five-metre bank in Wairarapa this morning.

The incident happened on Haurangi Road in Ruakokoputuna, south of Martinborough.

A 22-year-old Scottish tourist was driving along the road when she apparently lost control and ended up rolling down a five metre bank.

The accident was witnessed by people in a car following the quad bike. The witnesses called 111 and carried the woman up to the roadside. A road ambulance arrived at the same time as the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

She was suffering from possible back injuries, serious leg injuries as well as cuts and bruises, and was transported to Wellington Hospital Emergency Department in a serious condition.
