The baby girl who died in a "tragic accident" at Auckland's SkyCity had been on a family outing to the Sky Tower.

SkyCity spokesman Colin Espiner told the New Zealand Herald: "This tragic accident occurred while the family were in the SkyCity carpark after returning from a visit to the Sky Tower, our hearts go out to the family."

It is understood that the baby was aged between 1 and 3 months and suffered fatal injuries but that no vehicles were involved.

Police confirmed the infant died last night after being transported by ambulance to Starship children's hospital.

A police spokeswoman confirmed the death was not a criminal matter and said it would be referred to the Coroner.

Yesterday, a St John spokesperson said they received a call about the incident in Auckland's CBD shortly after 4.20pm.

"We sent two ambulances and a manager. We treated one patient in a critical condition and transported them to Starship Hospital," the spokesperson said.

Police confirmed they assisted ambulance staff at 5.39pm.
