Truck driver rescued after river plunge

A truck driver has been rescued with the assistance of rafts and kayaks after plunging in to the Buller River.

The un-laden logging truck crashed off State Highway 6 and in to the river around 10am today near Murchison, Tasman Police spokeswoman Barbara Dunn said.

Ms Dunn said the driver was trapped in the cab in a metre of water.

‘‘There are rafting and kayaking operations in the area and they have been assisting with a rescue," she said.

Police, fire service and a rescue helicopter were at the scene, and when the driver reached shore he would be taken to hospital, Ms Dunn said.

The truck came off the road about 3km north of Murchison.
