Turnips and swedes are the cause of sour tasting Anchor blue top milk.

Fonterra recalled several batches of the milk today after consumers in the lower North Island reported a funny flavour.

Managing director of Fonterra Brands New Zealand Leon Clement said the company had a number of customers in the lower North Island contact them about the taste of their Anchor blue top milk in the last few days.

"While it's safe to consume, we've found there's a quality issue limited to a few batches with Best Before dates 22-27 so we're removing it from shelves in the lower North Island.

"An investigation into the cause of the unusual tasting milk clearly points to it being a feed issue. It's because at this time of year, when grass levels are low, cows are sometimes fed brassica like turnips or swedes. When cows consume too much of this feed it can have an impact on the taste of the milk they produce."

He said customers who were concerned about the quality of their purchase should return it to the store they bought it from, or contact the Fonterra Customer Care team on 0800 262 467.
