Two dead in 600m car plunge

Two men have died after their car rolled about 600m down a bank near the small settlement of Te Hauke, south of Hastings.

A farm worker came across a crashed vehicle on a farm property on Burma Rd, off SH2 near Te Hauke, and police were alerted around 11.45am today.

Emergency services arrived to find the male driver dead in the vehicle.

The front seat passenger had been thrown from the vehicle and was found dead some metres from the car.

Police believe the crash occurred some time last night. No other vehicles were involved.

Initial investigations indicate the Honda car had left the road at the top of Burma Rd and rolled about 600m down a bank, police say.

The two men are from the local area but their names will not be released until all family have been notified.

The police Serious Crash Unit is investigating the crash, including trying to establish when it occurred.
