Two dead after Hawkes Bay crash

Two people are dead, one person has been seriously injured and another is unaccounted for after a car plunged about 150m off State Highway 2 in Hawkes Bay this afternoon.

Fire Service central communication spokesman Carlos Dempsey said the incident occurred near the Mohaka Viaduct, which spans the Mohaka River.

Fire Service high-angle rescue teams travelled to the crash scene from Napier and Hastings.

St John Ambulance spokesman Robbie Walker confirmed to the Herald on Sunday at least two people died in the crash.

Emergency service workers were looking for another person travelling in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Another passenger, with serious injuries, was treated at the scene.

The incident happened about 2.40pm.
