Two injured in Canterbury crash

Army medics pitched in to help rescue services after a nasty head-on smash near their base outside Christchurch this afternoon.

Three people were trapped after two cars collided about 1.30pm on State Highway 1 near Burnham Military Camp.

Firefighters had to cut three people out of the two severely damaged cars.

The army medics rushed to the scene to help until St John paramedics arrived, a Fire Service spokesman said.

Two people with serious injuries were airlifted to Christchurch Hospital aboard two helicopters.

The serious crash unit has arrived on the scene and SH1 is closed, with diversions down Burnham School Rd.
