The names of the four people who died in a crash near Waipu yesterday afternoon have been released by police.

They were Andy Li, 43 years, Catherine Li, 10, Xingwu Bian, 47 and Ximeng Bian, 8. All four were from Auckland.

The 8-year-old boy who was injured in the crash has been transferred to Auckland Starship Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

The crash occurred around 1pm yesterday when the north-bound Range Rover the five were travelling in on State Highway 1 attempted to complete a U-turn in front of a north-bound fully-laden logging truck.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
