Van crashes into side of bakery

A van crashed into the side of a Christchurch bakery on Friday morning, causing extensive damage to the shop.

It hit Coupland's Barrington on Barrington St, Spreydon, at 7.45am - and was still lodged inside the building at 9am.

There were employees in the shop at the time. The crash caused extensive damage to the side of the bakery and the inside of the shop.

The bakery is currently "closed until further notice", a sign outside read.

Coupland's Barrington employee Wendy was working in the shop when the van crashed into it.

"I was just doing normal stocking up and then I heard an almighty bang and all the bread was shunted as the whole van went through the wall," she said.

"It is a shame about the bread - that is a precious commodity these days."

Coupland's marketing manager Jenny Sullivan said once the van was removed they will go into "clean up mode". She said a builder will asses how long it could take to undertake repairs.

A post on the Somerfield Residents Association Facebook group read: "Coupland's bakery Barrington! Please avoid as someone has tried for drive through service.

"Nobody was injured," it read.

A police spokeswoman said there were no reported injuries.
