Waiheke Island fire victim named

The man who died in a Waiheke Island boat fire on Monday has been named as David Hargreaves Brady.

He was 67 and from Waiheke Island, police said.

Mr Brady's next of kin has been notified and is being supported by Victim Support, police said.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said police were not in a position to determine the cause of the fire.

"We are conducting a thorough investigation and wish to reassure local residents that we are doing all we can to determine the cause of the fire."

Mr Beard said the investigation had advanced considerably today, and the examination of the boat has now been completed.

The second man injured in the fire remains in Middlemore Hospital and has been able to speak with police.

The findings of the post-mortem examination would be referred to the coroner, police said.

Police have asked for anyone who has been on board the "Countess" in recent weeks to contact local Waiheke Police on (09) 372 1150.
