Warm weather staying put - forecasters

Most of the country should enjoy warm, sunny days this week as we enter the last fortnight of summer.

The next few days will bring more sunshine and temperature ranging in the late teens to mid-20s and most of the country will experience fine days.

The MetService says there will, however, be some patches of rain and cloudy spells from tomorrow in parts of the North Island and a rain warning in Fiordland for late tonight.

Duty forecaster Leigh Matheson said Auckland had had some great weather during the past few days and that was set to continue this week.

"It will be another fine day in Auckland [today]. There'll perhaps be a little bit of cloud coming in and some light easterly breezes, but otherwise a fine day.

"We're going to see some humid easterlies coming over the top of the North Island and places like the Coromandel and Auckland as well. So there will be some humidity in those places this week."

Ms Matheson said temperatures in Auckland would remain around the low to mid-20s this week, with a high of 25C today and 20C overnight.

Occasional patches of rain might be seen on Wednesday and Thursday, but overall it would be fine.

Heavy rain is expected in the city on Friday and Saturday and up until at least the beginning of next week.

Towards the Waikato, there is a temperature high of 27C today.

Wellington is expected to have some high winds later in the week.

There is only one heavy rain warning in the South Island at present.

Ms Matheson said: "Places like the Wairarapa, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay and the Bay of Plenty will get some cloudy spells from [tomorrow] onwards.

"Further south, in the west coast, there'll be rain about [tomorrow]. Most of the South Island will be pretty good as well, save for heavy rain in Fiordland."

What to expect

Today: Fine weather in most parts of the country, heavy rain warning in Fiordland tonight.

Tomorrow: More fine weather in most parts, but humid easterlies settling top of North Island.

Wed, Thurs: Patches of rain and cloudy spells in North Island including Auckland and Hamilton, with high winds in Wellington.

Fri to Sun: Rain for most of the country.
