Police have closed State Highway 1 north of Taupo in the North Island as they hunt a wanted and dangerous man.
Police say firearms are involved and are advising motorists not to pick up hitchhikers in Atiamuri and Ongaroto Rd, Whakamaru.
Police say State Highway 1 is closed because of a "developing situation" and diversions are in place via Ohakuri Rd and State Highway 30.
"Police ask that people travelling in this area do not pick up any hitchhikers as we are working to locate a wanted man who is dangerous and may try to seek transportation away from the area," police said.
