Wet weekend on way for much of NZ

Make the most of the fine weather -- a wet weekend is in store for most parts of New Zealand.

"Rain will arrive over South Island areas tomorrow, with heavy falls expected from the afternoon," MetService meteorologist Claire Flynn said.

MetService already has severe weather watches in place for heavy rain in Westland from tomorrow afternoon, and for Buller and the ranges of northwest Nelson on Saturday.

The east of the South Island is expected to cop heavy rain over the weekend. The North Island will have a mainly fine day tomorrow followed by a wet weekend, especially in western areas.

Early next week, yet another low front will form northwest of New Zealand, bringing the chance of heavy rain to the upper North Island.
