Woman finds stalker was former boyfriend

A Christchurch man who stalked his former girlfriend in an attempt to win her back has pleaded guilty to harassment charges.

Susan Wielaard, 42, lost 5kg in three weeks from stress and sleep deprivation after receiving text messages saying she was being watched and followed, The Press reported today.

She was targeted at work, with six or seven hang-up phone calls a day, and letters calling her a slut and worse were sent to her work, gym and landlord.

Ms Wielaard's former boyfriend Tony Indar Chand also appeared to be targeted and she turned to him for support.

The pair made several complaints to police over a three-week period.

However, when Chand's statement handwriting was compared with the stalker's notes, police became suspicious.

Chand, 39, later confessed he was making the calls.

In Christchurch District Court yesterday, he pleaded guilty to making a false statement to police and misuse of a telephone and was remanded in custody for sentencing on April 20.

Detective Sergeant Al Lester said the case was "one of the more unique ones I've dealt with".

Chand had orchestrated a "cunning plan" and early on had made it look like another man, who knew Ms Wielaard, was responsible, he said.
