Woman held at gunpoint in Whangarei - reports

A woman was held at gunpoint and forced to carry a package down a Whangarei road, according to reports being investigated by police.

The young woman was spotted by motorists with her arm in a wristlock and a pistol pointed at her back on Maunu Rd around 1.25pm yesterday.

She was carrying a package in her arms, according to two people who drove past the pair around 80 metres west of Te Mai Rd, and contacted police.

Officers cordoned off the area and conducted a search, but were unable to find the man and woman, sergeant Stephanie Hudson of Whangarei police said.

The man was described as Maori, aged in his 20s, and wearing dark clothing, reportedly a long-sleeved top and long trousers.

The woman appeared to be in her late teens or early 20s, and was wearing a pink top and black trousers, with her dark shoulder-length hair in a pony tail.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious, or a couple matching the descriptions of the man and woman, is asked to contact police.
