A 46-year-old Tokoroa woman has died after being hit by a truck and trailer unit while walking along State Highway 1 at Kinleith in the early hours of this morning.
The woman was walking on a narrow area of the highway, which had a 100km/h speed limit and no street lighting, about 1.15am, police said.
The driver of the Scania truck and trailer was not injured, but was shaken by the incident.
``All deaths on our roads have a large effect on a number of people and whanau,'' Taupo Road Policing Group's Senior Sergeant Fane Troy said.
``Police encourage everyone out walking, cycling or doing any activity near our roads ensure they wear clothing that makes them visible to road users.''
The Taupo Serious Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
Road and weather conditions at the time were fine.
The name of the woman will be released once family have been advised.
