Woman seriously injured in Auckland fire

A woman remains in a serious condition after a block of flats caught fire in Auckland last night.

Emergency services were called to the property in Hamlin Road in Mt Wellington about 9.40pm, an ambulance spokeswoman said.

Northern fire communications shift manager Paul Radden said a neighbour had heard the woman scream and saw smoke billowing from her flat.

She was taken to Middlemore Hospital suffering from serious burns.

A hospital spokeswoman said she remained in the Intensive Care Unit today in a serious but stable condition.

Mr Radden said it took 30 minutes, three fire appliances and support staff for the fire to be brought under control.

A fire investigator returned to the scene today to conduct an examination.

Meanwhile, just 40 minutes after that blaze, a collision on the Southern Motorway at Takanini sent another patient to Middlemore with serious injuries.

And just before 2am today, another crash in Clover Park landed a patient in critical condition at Middlemore.
