A woman has been sexually assaulted in Palmerston North over the weekend.
The 18-year-old woman left an inner-city bar shortly before 3am on Saturday and was "befriended by a male" who took her to George St, where the attack took place, Detective Dave Wilson said.
A small portion of George St was cordoned off while a scene examination was completed by police.
Inquiries were continuing.
Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed a man running from the area around 3am.
It was understood two men, who were not involved in the attack, were approached by the woman and asked for help, Mr Wilson said.
The two men yelled at the alleged attacker, who ran away, he said.
"Police would like to hear from these males who may hold vital information," Mr Wilson said.
