A man has been rescued off the Northland coast overnight after his yacht foundered on rocks and started sinking.
Coastguard spokeswoman Georgie Smith said a night-time operation was launched to find the stricken 62-year-old sailor off the Whangarei coastline after he called police to say he was in trouble.
He was found alive but in a distressed state about five hours later after a shoreline search was mounted by local Surf Life Saving volunteers.
The man was taken to hospital for treatment.
