Funding boost for special education

More than 2000 students will benefit from special needs funding announced today by Associate Education Minister Rodney Hide.

He launched "Success for all - every school, every child", the Government's response to the special education review, today.

He said an additional 1100 children would get support from ongoing and reviewable resourcing schemes (ORRS) and a further 1000 students would get support in their first three years of school.

Changes would also be made to allow 600 deaf, blind and low-vision children to receive more flexible services and support, Mr Hide said.

The review found 50 percent of schools were fully inclusive of special needs students. The Government wants 80 percent to be fully inclusive by 2014 and the remaining 20 percent on the way.

The changes will be funded with $69 million over four years, as set aside in the last two budgets.
