The Immigration Service has notified the police about a scam exploiting the Fijian community that is thought to be operating in the Auckland area, the Government said today.
Immigration Minister Jonathan Coleman said it involved offers of residency permits under the Pacific Access Category.
He said there had been no change to the policy of excluding Fijians from that category - a policy that had been in place since 2006.
"Immigration New Zealand is the only agency which can grant visas to travel to New Zealand, or permits to remain here," he said.
"Anyone offering a visa or permit to a Fijian national under the Pacific Access Category is providing misleading information and acting illegally." He said anyone who received such an offer should contact the Immigration Service.
Dr Coleman gave no further details of the scam and did not say who was operating it.
